Whale sharks sea food, eat it.
Mafia Island…sounds like it should be in Italy, right? This little island gem is, however, in Tanzania. The only link to Italy I can think of is that the whale sharks here, too, enjoy a good feast. In last season’s work, we found that the local whale sharks like to gorge themselves on sergestid shrimps. These shrimps are very big, for zooplankton at least, and form dense schools at the surface. And the sharks capitalise on these high-biomass prey patches. Back in the water off Mafia Island again, the shrimps have been out in numbers – a culinary reunion of sorts.
